ARCH 371 JUNIOR DESIGN STUDIO PROJECT 1: GALLERY CAFÉ (15 points)

The Gallery Café integrates the work of local artists into a coffee shop in downtown Champaign. Your proposals will occupy the ground level and must be linked to outdoor space (the proportion of indoor and outdoor space might vary between proposals). The surrounding built environment and the Gallery Café must interact and ensure a spontaneous flow of space.

PROGRAM

• Main Entry/Lobby: 300 SF

• Restaurant-Space/ Seating Area: 1000 SF

• Bar/Counter Area: 500 SF

• Kitchen: 500 SF

• Toilets (gender neutral, at least 1 ADA): 200 SF

• Exhibition Space Allocation/Display: Varies

• Outdoor Space/Seating Area: Varies

SITES

You’ll be using the site from Exercise 4 in your sophomore year. Please refer to your analysis from that course for this proposal.

DELIVERABLES

• Site documentation: Photos, sketches, and diagrams from your site visit; you can include analysis work from your sophomore year as well

• Site map: aerial satellite image of your site with diagrammatic analysis overlaid in Illustrator (11x17, color; all sites to be represented at the same scale)

• Floor plan of intervention and immediate context (1/16” = 1’)

• One elevation of intervention and immediate context (1/8” = 1’)

• One section of intervention and immediate context (1/8” = 1’)

• Two perspective collages (can be hybrid hand drawing/digital montage); be precise about scale and materiality

• Digital presentation (see INDD guide below)
