PROJECT OVERVIEW

The community center is a multi-purpose gathering space that accommodates formal and informal communal activities at a range of group sizes. Flagship components of the program include an auditorium (for larger performances and formal lectures), a gallery space (for more informal exhibitions and festivals), and classrooms (for smaller group meetings and more intimate workshops). The community center also includes a dedicated outdoor public space that augments the activities of the primary indoor program areas and facilitates specific seasonal programming such as a farmers’ market. The community center will serve the diverse neighborhood of Albany Park, as well as the diverse constituents that pass through the site daily via the CTA Brown Line’s Kimball terminal that is adjacent to the site.

Each of you has selected a cultural theme, and this theme will be central to how you ultimately program the building. For example, performance, rehearsal, and recording studios might have more prominence in your design if your theme is music. Likewise, if you are focusing on food, preparation areas, rooms for cooking classes, and markets might feature heavily. Your theme will guide your unique program and help develop the ground floor experience.

STUDY MODELS: DUE WEDNESDAY 9/22/21

Build a shared site model at 1/32” = 1’ scale (see Resources below for relevant files). Individually, create three study models to fit into the site model, showing different massing and material concepts for your building proposal. Consider the relationship to the street, indoor vs. outdoor space, maximum allowable height, and relationships to neighboring buildings and urban spaces. The studies should draw on ideas from your collages and our previous discussions.

We will have desk crits on Wednesday 9/22 to review the three models and develop a direction.

PRECEDENT STUDIES: DUE MONDAY 9/27

Create two critical orthographic drawings of your selected precedent, scaled appropriately for the drawing type. For example, some precedents might be shown best in plan and section, or some might be elevation and detail—these will be different scales depending on what you want to show.

Each drawing should fit on one 11x17 layout. Include thumbnail images of the precedent on your sheets for visual reference, along with basic project information. See the INDD template below for a layout guide.

After you have completed these drawings, sketch your own proposal in the same way—if you drew a plan and elevation for the precedent, sketch the same types of drawings for your proposal. Lay these out on a third 11x17 sheet, and print all your sheets for pin-up on 9/27.
