SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CAPSTONE SEMINAR WEEK 1
SUGGESTED RESPONSE TOPICS
300-word reading responses should be posted to the Week 1 shared Google Document by 11AM on Friday, August 27. Use class time on Friday to read through your peers’ responses and provide comments on at least two of them. Comments should be in the form of paragraph-length responses to ideas that spark your interest, and can include questions, challenges, and disagreements.
What are some design opportunities, at different scales, that could mitigate the issues Ghosh describes?
What are some possible definitions (beyond the familiar one) of “unthinkable” in relation to climate change?
Discuss relationships between climate change and colonialism/empire.
Lustgarten outlines some possible benefits of climate change in certain areas of the world. Are his observations convincing, or do the drawbacks elsewhere outweigh the benefits in these specific places?
How does Lustgarten’s article make you think differently about global agriculture trade and climate-driven immigration? What geopolitical dynamics are at play because of climate change?
Discuss sustainable design strategies at different scales for responding to potential crises in the global agriculture trade.
ASSIGNMENT A
Create a 7-minute visual presentation that introduces the class to your background, current interests, and past work. If you have thoughts about possible thesis topics, please include them at the end. You’ll present these for the class on Monday, August 30.
