ASSIGNMENT

Select one of the two sites indicated on the UIUC Master Plan here. This will be your site for the semester. Visit the site in person and via Google Earth, gathering detailed information through sketches, photography, and notes about the existing conditions. Build a 3D model of this area of campus and create one military oblique projection view that shows your design guidelines for re-planning all outdoor spaces for social distancing. Consider street width and programming, sidewalk dimensions and programming, planting strategies, ADA accessibility, building entrances/exits, car parking (if needed), circulation for all forms of vehicular and micro-mobility, and any other issues that emerge during your research.

Use the case studies below, as well as the readings from last week, to help guide your planning and zoning strategies.

Drawing size: 24x36 landscape orientation with 0.5” margins all sides; scale to be determined by your team

3D building models: SketchUp Warehouse

Suggested representation workflow:

(1) Export satellite plan view of site from Google Earth.

(2) Place Google Earth image in CAD and scale to 1:1 using ALIGN command. Make sure drawing units are set to feet and inches.

(3) Trace image for existing conditions and confirm existing dimensions in Google Earth using measurement tools.

(4) Draw design strategies in plan view in CAD with layers organized for importing into Rhino.

(5) Import CAD linework into Rhino and confirm units are in feet and inches. Use Rhino to build 3D massing of the site, including your space planning interventions.

(6) Set your desired view using the “isometric” view type. Select all the relevent components and create a flat drawing using MAKE2D command. Export this linework to a new .DWG file.

(7) Use CAD to clean up the linework, and set up your sheet size and drawing scale in paper space.

(8) From CAD paper space, export a PDF of your drawing and use Illustrator, Photoshop, and/or InDesign to finalize your graphics.

Representation guidelines: Black and gray line work with maximum of 3 highlight colors (see examples here); include scaled figures, vehicles, and all other elements necessary to demonstrate the full scope of activities. Generic figures, vehicles, and other objects can be downloaded from the SketchUp Warehouse and imported into Rhino.
