INSTRUCTIONS
Tape your sheet of 11x17 paper to your drafting table in landscape (horizontal) orientation, making sure it is parallel to the edges of your drafting board. Use your T-square to align the page before taping it down.
With the 4H pencil, lightly draw a 1/2 inch margin on all four sides of the sheet. Within those margins, draw light vertical lines 4 inches apart. You should now have four identical columns across the sheet. Your lines should be light enough that you can see them when you’re drawing, but they disappear if you step 5 feet away.
With the 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, and 4B pencils, and the T-square, draft several solid lines 3” wide centered in the lef-tmost column of the paper. Experiment with different pressures and see how light and dark you can draw. Fill the column with at least 30 lines.
In the second column, use 2H, H, and HB pencils to draw a series of fifteen dashed lines, 3” wide and centered on the column. Try out different lengths of dash, and pressures on the pencils to vary lineweight. In general, dashed lines are proportioned 2/3 line and 1/3 gap; put another way, the gap is usually half the length of the line. So if you draw a dash 1/8”, your gap will be 1/16” before the next dash. Take your time with this -- it requires patience and precision. Keep your pencil tip sharp and try to maintain even pressure as your draw.
Lightly draw two 3” x 3” squares centered in the third column. Using two different pencils (H and 4B recommended) create a dark-to-light gradient to fill each square. Try to only use the pencil for this (meaning, no smudging with your fingers). Again, be patient and exercise control over the drawing tool.
Draw anything you like in the last column using the principles of lineweight, linetype, tone, and gradient to create an image. It can be as abstract or realistic as you like.
Finally, add text on this sheet: label each column from left to right using 1/8” tall capital letters. The first three should read LINEWEIGHTS, LINETYPES, and GRADIENTS. The bottom of the text should be located 1/2” above the bottom margin of the sheet, and each word should begin 1/2” from the left edge of the column.
Put your name and the date on the back, using the same lettering principles above. Submit to your instructor at the end of class.

VISUAL GUIDE
This is just a guide. Your drawing does not need to look identical to this, just as long as it follows the instructions above.
