INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1 Starting in class on Thursday, September 8, collect a series of seven textures on 11x17 paper from surfaces across campus. You may do this in a number of ways:
Charcoal or pencil rubbing
Rubbing with another material to create an image on the paper (dirt, makeup, glue, and so on)
Wetting the paper and pressing it onto a rough surface to make a physical impression
Any other process you want to explore
Step 2 Select three of your surface impressions and cut them apart into different geometries (you may want to vary large and small pieces). Re-assemble the pieces into new compositions that are 11x17 rectangles in size. Strive for no waste: every piece you cut should end up in a new composition. These can be assembled with glue, tape, staples, paper clips, or anything else, as long as they hold together.
Step 3 Translate your favorite composition (original or reassembled) into a hard-line drafted diagram on a 22x30 drawing sheet (scale the image up to fit the new size). The challenge here is to take the surface impressions—tone and texture—and translate them into a drawing made entirely of technical linework. Consider the techniques we have already discussed, including lineweights, linetypes, hatching, and stippling. Also consider the representational themes we have discussed, including visibility, hierarchy, contrast, solid/void, and efficiency of drawing.
Be ready to pin up your 22x30 drawing at the beginning of class on Thursday, September 15.
