LA 280 DESIGN COMMUNICATIONS 1 11x17 MODELS (75 POINTS)

Sydney Romero, Fall 2017

Assigned: Monday September 20

Due: Tuesday October 11, beginning of class (all models)

MODEL 1 (assigned September 20)

Select one 11x17 abstract image (provided). Mount it to a flat surface with a glue stick, and use the image as a guideline for cutting, extruding, and assembling a 3D model. You can interpret the three-dimensionality of the image as you choose.

You are limited to flat, rigid surfaces for this first exercise (chipboard, cardboard, foam core). Make sure that the image remains mounted to your initial surface so that it’s still visible as you’re working. If it helps, consider the image to be a topography map from which you are building a topography model.

You should complete this first phase by the beginning of class on Tuesday, September 27.

MODEL 2 (assigned September 27)

Reinterpret your first model in a new material of your choosing, preferably something found or recycled. Some suggestions include newspaper, magazines, junk mail, plastic straws, foam or paper cups, kitchen sponges, pipe cleaners, or anything else that comes to mind. Remember, this is an iteration, not a replica. You should be inspired by the first exercise while developing it in ways you think are interesting and creative.

You should complete this second phase by the beginning of class on Tuesday, October 4.

MODEL 3 (assigned October 4)

Reinterpret your second model using only a box of tissues or a roll of toilet paper. Use water to soften and shape the material. In this design iteration, think about layering, accumulation, transparency, and density. You may use an 11x17 cardboard base to start.

You should complete this third phase by the beginning of class on Tuesday, October 11. All models will be due for pin-up on this date.
