TUTORIAL
Please find the Rhino to Illustrator workflow tutorial here (on Box). Additional support and tutorials for Illustrator can be found here (LInkedIn Learning) and here (Adobe).
ASSIGNMENT
Select one of your Rhino models to begin this assignment. Take the following steps to create two diagrams: one isometric and one perspectival. Refer to the recorded Illustrator tutorial as needed.
In the 3D view window in Rhino, set your view to Isometric, and choose a direction (NE, NW, SE, or SW). Rhino will read your model as if “up” in the Top View is north, so you can orient your isometric view accordingly.
Save your view in Named Views.
Select the elements you want for your diagram and use MAKE2D to create your linework. Export both visible and hidden lines, and check the box to group output.
The linework will appear in your Top View. From there, using the GUMBALL widget, move it to an area of the grid that does not intersect with the model. Using EXPORT, export the linework to an Illustrator file (.ai). Set the export options to 1/4” = 1’ scale.
Open your file in Illustrator. The art board will be set to 8.5x11 as a default, and your linework will not show up yet. Zoom out using CTRL+- (or Command on a Mac) until you see your linework. Select it all and drag it over to the art board. Using the Artboard tool, change the size of your sheet to a standard 24x36 landscape orientation.
Using the layer panel, organize your linework based on what it represents (i.e., make layers for landform, water, buildings, and so on). Each category should have its own layer to make file management easier. Save early and often using the .ai file type.
Assign lineweights, line types, and colors to your linework, and add tones and patterns at your discretion to graphically describe the various forms in your model. Use the text tools to add titles, labels, and any other information you find relevant. Be creative and experiment with the representation. It does not need to be realistic—diagrams should describe process and relationships.
Follow the same steps to create a perspectival diagram. Combine your two diagrams onto one 24x36 artboard and export one JPEG of the file. Upload this JPEG to Box with the naming convention LastName_FirstName_Diagrams.JPG.
