UNIT 1 PART 2 : AUTOCAD GRAPHIC STANDARDS

Assignment Sheet PDF

Tutorial 2 Chapter 1: Hatches [about 40 minutes]

Tutorial 2 Chapter 2: Scaling and Viewports [about 30 minutes]

Tutorial 2 Chapter 3: Lineweights and Colors [about 15 minutes]

ELEMENTS TO TRACE

At a minimum, your drawing should include tracing the following:

  • The edges of circulation pathways within the plaza

  • Benches and curbs within the plaza

  • Vegetation (use circles of different sizes as abstract representations of trees and plants in plan)

  • Building profiles (just the outer edges, do not trace the details/equipment on each roof)

  • Pavement patterns (like paving and sidewalk joints) or pavement outlines to fill in with hatches later on

USEFUL COMMANDS

  • UNITS Set units to Architectural and precision to ¼”

  • ALIGN Use to scale image to 1:1 for tracing

  • PR (PROPERTIES) Opens property box for any object selected

  • MA (MATCHPROPERTIES) Select a source and match other objects to those properties (layer, color, linetype, etc.)

  • L (LINE) Creates a straight line segment with two endpoints

  • PL (POLYLINE) Creates a continuous line made of connected straight segments

  • ARC Creates an arc (use the ribbon to select how it’s drawn)

  • C (CIRCLE) Creates a circle with a specific radius or diameter

  • RECT (RECTANGLE) Draw a rectangle by plotting two corners, or input side lengths

  • OSNAP Sets the conditions for snapping to objects (use ribbon at bottom of screen to set preferences)

  • M (MOVE) Moves an object from one point to another

  • CO (COPY) Copies one or multiple objects from one point to another

  • O (OFFSET) Offsets an object at a specified distance (useful for drawing street curbs)

  • FILLET Curves a sharp corner based on a radius input

  • TR (TRIM) Trims away a portion of an object between two others intersecting it

  • EX (EXTEND) Extends a line to a boundary

  • MI (MIRROR) Mirrors an object around a selected reflection line

  • LAYER Opens the Layer Properties box, where you can make new layers and change existing ones

  • LAYMCUR (or button under layer list) Makes the layer of a selected object current

  • HATCH Allows you to select objects or spaces in your drawing to be filled in with different colors and patterns

  • PROPERTIES Opens a panel where you can adjust the properties of an individual object (color, layer, lineweight, linetype). You can lock and unlock viewports in this panel as well.

  • VPORTS Create a viewport in paper space that can be scaled to your preference

  • LAYISO and LAYUNISO Isolates and un-isolates selected layers

  • SELECTSIMILAR Finds objects that have similar properties to the one selected

  • F3 (Keyboard Shortcut) Toggles object snap on and off

  • F8 (Keyboard Shortcut) Toggles orthographic (up and down) drawing on and off

  • Tools > Options For adjusting user display and drafting tools

SITE PLAN EXAMPLES

Eventually you will complete a black-and-white site plan that is of high presentation quality. Below are some inspirations for how your drawing may look by the end of this unit:

MAC USERS

The following links describe the CAD interface and layers management for Mac users, with explanatory screenshots of the interface. This information will be supplemented with further explanations in class:
